The Celebrated TV Show

TWIN PEAKS

Created by David Lynch and Mark Frost

What Is It?

Twin Peaks is a television show that originally aired from 1990-1991, with a brief revival in 2017. The show was created by Mark Frost and well-known auteur David Lynch. It stands out from other shows due to its quirky humor and dark atmosphere.

The Main Cast

Twin Peaks has a large ensemble of memorable characters, led by the protagonist, Special Agent Dale Cooper (played by Kyle MacLachlan). Significant side characters include members of the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Department and Laura’s classmates. A main trope parodied in Twin Peaks is the soap opera, which many characters’ arcs reflect.

The Premise

In the quiet northern town of Twin Peaks, the popular homecoming queen, Laura Palmer, is found dead, wrapped in plastic. Special Agent Dale Cooper of the FBI is sent to investigate the murder and becomes enamored with the town.

The Music

The soundtrack composed by Angelo Badalamenti has become iconic in its own right. The main theme has cemented itself in its corner of pop culture. Music is a strong element of the show, with its themes often playing repeatedly throughout each episode, further pushing the tongue-in-cheek parody of soap operas.

The Original Series

The original run of Twin Peaks ran for two seasons. What set the show apart from others airing at the time was its confidence in the unexplained. Sometimes questions were left unanswered, leaving the audience to speculate, sometimes weeks on end.

David Lynch, one of the creators, intended never to solve the death of Laura Palmer but was forced to by ABC executives. As a result, his involvement during Season 2 was reduced. However, he did return for the finale, which left audiences on a cliffhanger that would go unresolved for nearly 30 years.

Fire Walk with Me

In addition to three seasons, Lynch also produced a prequel film titled Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me. The film details the events leading up to the murder of Laura Palmer, taking on a very dark tone. It has become well-known for its frank depiction of abuse. When first released, it was not well-received but has gained critical acclaim over the years as one of Lynch’s best films.

The Return

After some negotiations behind the scenes, Twin Peaks returned to television after 26 years, continuing the story. Unlike the first two seasons, Season 3 (dubbed “The Return”) takes a darker approach to the story and allowed Lynch full creative freedom.

The Legacy

To this day, Twin Peaks remains one of the most popular television shows ever broadcast. In Northern Washington (where a majority of the show was shot), several towns have established a “Twin Peaks Day” to celebrate its impact. And the show itself broke a lot of ground. It proved that a show could do more than just entertain. It could make people feel discomfort and beauty all at once. Genres were mixed together to create something utterly unique. Some modern TV shows would not exist now if it weren’t for Twin Peaks. Its legacy is undeniable.
